May 2004 - Security Point releases Portable Laptop Scanner for IT Resellers

Kilross Network Protection Ltd announced this week that Security Point is releasing a portable vulnerability scanner for use by IT resellers.

Up until now the testing and securing of IT networks have been within the realm of specialist security companies. Now Security Point is putting this skill into the hands of an ordinary IT reseller.

The reseller will take the laptop from site to site and charge the end-user for diagnosing and fixing their internal and external vulnerabilities. All vulnerabilities are listed in a report with line by line details on how to fix them. The reseller can use his own logo and name on each page of the report.

The basis for the scanner is a signature database of over 4700 unique hacker signatures developed over eight years. This database is the largest database of its type in the world. Updates to the database are automatically downloaded everyday or whenever the laptop is connected to the Internet. These updates are encrypted using an encryption key of over 4000 bits which makes the update procedure very secure. Most scanner competitors use an encryption key of less than 100 bits.

The reseller has a very reasonable initial charge for the Laptop and then pays for a license for each IP he wants to test. Licenses are bought in advance and the more IPs bought at any one time the cheaper they are. The Laptop uses a Centrino microprocessor and can be booted in either Windows XP or Linux. The reseller can also install his own programs and use it as his normal laptop.
